50ppm vs 500ppm Diesel — Which Grade Should You Buy?

The number in diesel's name is its sulphur content in parts per million — and choosing the wrong grade can cost you an engine. DieselInBulk supplies both 50ppm low-sulphur diesel and 500ppm diesel across Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga, and the question we answer most often is which one a customer's equipment actually needs. Here is the honest comparison.

What the sulphur number actually means

Sulphur in diesel produces sulphur dioxide when burned and attacks exhaust after-treatment systems. 50ppm diesel — often called low-sulphur or ultra-low-sulphur diesel in conversation — contains at most 50 parts per million of sulphur, enabling the catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters and exhaust gas recirculation systems on modern engines to function. 500ppm contains ten times as much sulphur and predates these systems. Both grades sold by DieselInBulk are SANS-compliant automotive diesel from licensed terminals; the difference is compatibility, not legitimacy.

Which engines need which grade

Use 50ppm if your equipment has a diesel particulate filter, common-rail injection, or was manufactured roughly after 2010 — this covers most modern trucks, bakkies, buses, generators and construction machinery. 500ppm remains appropriate for older tractors, stationary engines, older agricultural machinery and plant designed before low-sulphur requirements. When in doubt, check the manufacturer's documentation or the sticker inside the fuel flap — or call us with your equipment list and we will tell you plainly. Running 500ppm in a 50ppm engine can destroy a particulate filter and injectors within months; the small saving is never worth that repair bill.

Price, availability and the practical choice

500ppm typically trades slightly below 50ppm, reflecting refining costs — but the gap is small, and shrinking as the market moves toward low-sulphur standardisation. For mixed fleets, many operators standardise on 50ppm across everything: it is safe for older engines too, simplifies storage to a single grade, and eliminates the risk of the wrong fuel in the wrong tank. We supply both grades on the same delivery schedule, so the choice is yours — made on facts, not on whichever grade a supplier happens to be pushing this month.

Certified Fuel

Fuel Quality You Can Prove

Every litre DieselInBulk delivers is SANS-compliant diesel sourced from licensed terminals — never informal channels. We supply both 50ppm low-sulphur diesel, required by modern common-rail engines and emissions-controlled fleets, and 500ppm diesel for older plant and agricultural machinery. Certificates of analysis are available on request for any batch, which matters when an engine warranty, an insurance claim or an environmental audit depends on proving your fuel was in specification. Combined with calibrated metering and signed delivery manifests, your fuel records stay clean from terminal to tank.

Questions, Answered

FAQs

Can I use 500ppm diesel in a modern engine?

No — engines with particulate filters and common-rail systems require 50ppm. Using 500ppm risks expensive injector and emissions-system damage.

Is 50ppm diesel safe for older engines?

Yes — 50ppm is backward compatible with older equipment. Many mixed-fleet operators standardise on 50ppm for exactly this reason.

How much cheaper is 500ppm than 50ppm?

Usually a small margin per litre reflecting refining costs. Call +27 65 817 8316 for today's delivered prices for both grades in your town.
